For students of Dharma, the issues of ‘self and ego’ and ‘non-self and non-ego’ are central to our spiritual quest and awakening. The Buddha stated that our belief in the permanent and solid nature of oneself in a world of other solid selves is the major cause of our ensnarement in self-created dissatisfaction, confusion and emotional afflictions. Many of us have studied and practiced the Buddha’s teaching on non-self over and over again for years, and yet, why have we not yet experienced the deep realization, selflessness and freedom that they point to?

In our Western culture the self is central to our experience. From early childhood we relate as a separate self, encouraged to stand out, get ahead and develop individuality. Identified with our storylines, our narcissistic, neurotic, drama king-and-queen selves develop. The dysfunctional schemas of self, and the erroneous beliefs and assumptions that lie at the core of these schemas, color and shape our perceptions and our actions. They are a hindrance to the realization of the teachings and our success on the spiritual path.

We cannot spiritually bypass the issues of the way self has manifested in our lives. Until we look deeply into our storyline drama-self and understand how it functions in our lives, until we heal our early psychological wounds, we are unable to successfully end our suffering and manifest ourselves as awakened beings, experiencing our fundamental oneness and connection with everything and everyone.

This thee-day retreat will be primarily based on the meditative self-reflective process. We will look deeply, so that we can understand the role of self in our lives. We will practice on this retreat so as to gain the tools and insight that will allow for understanding, healing and transformation, and that will lead to the realizations essential to our spiritual aspirations.

This retreat is especially designed for the summer session of the year-long Deconstructing the Myth of Self Intensive that began in March. However, it is also open and appropriate to any FCM members that have taken this Intensive in previous years or have participated in a previous FCM Deconstructing the Myth of Self Retreat.

The retreat begins with dinner on Thursday, July 22nd, and ends after lunch on Sunday, July 25th.  We ask that all participants plan to participate in the entire retreat.

The retreat is being held in-person at the Florida Community of Mindfulness Practice Center.  Accommodations are offered on our FCM campus in our newly completed Great Cloud Refuge building.  The registration fee is $225 for double occupancy rooms with twin beds, $195 for a 4-bed dorm room with privacy screens, and $175 for bunk bed rooms (one with one bunk set, one with two sets).  If there is someone you wish to room with, please indicate their name when you register.

The registration fee covers both room and board (three vegan meals daily), as well as any administrative and incidental expenses connected to the retreat. The teachings are offered in the Buddhist tradition of Dana, wherein the teachers freely give of themselves to the students out of gratitude for what they’ve received from their teachers and a desire to be of service. The student’s response is also based on Dana, i.e. generosity that naturally flows from a sense of appreciation of the value of Dharma and gratitude to the living lineage.

A limited number of Retreat Scholarships are available. Please click here to see FCMs Retreat Scholarship Policy and for an application, which needs to be submitted prior to the registration deadline for this retreat which is July 1.

The retreat coordinator will be sending additional information to accepted registrants before the retreat begins.

The last day to register for the retreat is July 1st.

*Please note that your registration does not guarantee acceptance into the retreat. Once registration has closed, all who registered will be considered for acceptance into the retreat. You will be notified if you have been accepted into the retreat within a few days of the closing of registration.

Please note that participation in this retreat is open to only members of the Florida Community of Mindfulness. While participation in many of our online  programs are open to everyone, membership in FCM is for persons wanting to deepen their practice of living an awakened life by being part of a dedicated practice community, having a direct relationship with a Dharma teacher, and participating in practice opportunities such as Intensives and longer retreats.
