    Dharma Path Fall 2017 Intensive

    The Practices of a Bodhisattva

    October 2 – December 18

“What great good fortune it is, and how comforting to the mind, that there is still such a thing as bodhicitta!  In times like these, even to hear of the idea of it is almost inconceivable. Yet here we have in our hands a manual that can actually teach us how to practice it and thereby lead us to Buddhahood.”   -Jigme Khyentse

Those whose life is informed by the desire for liberation from an existence of narrow self-centeredness, constricted emotionality, and underlying dissatisfaction in order to better connect to, understand, love and bring only goodness to their fellow beings are called bodhisattvas.  Bodhisattvas cultivate bodhicitta, the seed of understanding and love that lies dormant within each of us. This way of living taught and modeled by the Buddha and the endless stream of awakened beings is called the Path of the Bodhisattva or the ‘path of the awakened and compassionate warrior’.

There is no better introduction to the living path of the bodhisattva than the eloquent and insightful poem/text, The Bodhicaryavatara, by the great eighth century Indian Buddhist, Shantideva. The Fall 2017 Dharma Path Intensive will continue our study of this text, focusing on the final four chapters. Participants in the Intensive will use the text and commentaries as a manual for the basic practices of the bodhisattva and as the model/guide to our participation in the ageless stream of beings that have consciously made the bodhisattva path their guidepost to awakening and living an enlightened life of purpose and meaning.

This intensive will begin October 2 and continue through December 18. Supportive activities for this Intensive will include Dharma Talks by Fred, participation in bi-weekly, small-group video forums with Fred, and assigned readings.  Dharma texts to be read will be announced once registration has been completed. The commitments for this Intensive are listed below. Before registering for the Intensive please read the commitments and reflect carefully on whether you will be able to keep them.

    Commitments for each Intensive participant

    1. The commitment to a minimum of one hour of daily formal meditative practice and/or other practices related to this intensive.
    2. The commitment to participate in bi-weekly small group video forums with Fred during the intensive.
    3. The commitment to be present for the phone Dharma Talks.
    4. The commitment to read Dharma texts that will be assigned to participants.
    5. The commitment to attend all the practice periods of your Sangha during the Intensive, as possible.

Please note that this Intensive is open only to FCM members who either participated in the Winter/Spring 2017 Dharma Path Intensive or have obtained Fred’s permission.  For information about FCM membership, please access our website at www.floridamindulness.org.

There is a suggested donation of $100 associated with this Intensive. This is a suggested donation, and participants are free to donate more or less, depending on their individual practice of Dana and their financial situation. You may pay on-line or send your check made out to the Florida Community of Mindfulness (FCM) to Florida Community of Mindfulness, 6501 N. Nebraska Ave., Tampa, FL 33604.

    NEW REGISTRATION PROCEDURES:

Please read information below BEFORE you click to register!

Please also note that we are implementing some changes in registration this fall designed to simplify the process of organizing intensives.  When you register, you will be asked to indicate your preferences for the required bi-weekly, small-group zoom forums with Fred.  The following six small groups will be listed, and you will be required to score each group as one of the following: my first choice, my second choice, cannot do, or could do but not preferred. Please have your calendar available when you register so that you can complete this part of the registration process accurately and do not need to request a change after submitting your registration.  *Note that participants in the fourth Group #3 forum designated below as Nov 23 (Thanksgiving Day) will be rescheduled to participate in another forum after registration closes.  There will not actually be a forum on Thanksgiving day.

Group #1:  Wednesday mornings at 7:30am on Oct 11, Oct 25, Nov 8, Nov 22, and Dec 6

Group #2:  Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm on Oct 11, Oct 25, Nov 8, Nov 22, and Dec 6

Group #3:  Thursday mornings at 7:30am on Oct 12, Oct 26, Nov 9, Nov 23*, and Dec 7

Group #5:  Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm on Oct 18, Nov 1, Nov 15, Nov 29, and Dec 13

Group #6:  Thursday mornings at 7:30am on Oct 19, Nov 2, Nov 16, Nov 30, and Dec 14

Registration will close on September 22.  Please be sure to register by this date.  For the past several years the number of people requesting to join the Intensive after registration has closed has been increasing. Late registrations greatly increase the workload for Intensive organizers. Thus, out of consideration, and to ensure your acceptance into the Intensive, we are requesting that you either register immediately or mark the registration closing date in your calendar now.

Deconstructing the Myth of SelfA Six- Month Practice Intensive

    Part I: October 2 -December 18, 2017

Part II will be offered in the Spring of 2018

“To study Buddhism is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be enlightened by all things. To be enlightened by all things is to be free from attachment to the body and mind of one's self and of others.” --   Zen Master Dogen

For students of Dharma, the issues of ‘self and ego’ and ‘non-self and non-ego’ are central to our spiritual quest and awakening. The intellectual and, most importantly, experiential resolution of this seeming paradox – i.e. what appears to be solid and real is not – has major implications for the well-being or ill-being that we experience daily in our personal lives. The Buddha stated that our belief in the permanent and solid nature of oneself in a world of other solid selves is the major cause of our ensnarement in self-created dissatisfaction, confusion and emotional afflictions. It is this fundamental ignorance of the way things really are (Reality) that prevents us from experiencing our fundamental oneness and connection with everything and everyone.

The focus of this Intensive and the overriding commitment of all participants is to undertake a deep, comprehensive and penetrative look at the self in an intellectual/analytical, psychological, and, most importantly, experiential/meditative manner. The intent is to ground participants in the traditional Buddhist philosophical and psychological teachings and practices related to self/non-self, as well as to personalize and individualize these practices for each participant.

Participants in this Intensive will be provided with a path of practice that will include mentoring, readings, meditation practices, and daily living assignments. Dharma talks by the senior students leading the Intensive will be offered through Zoom video-conferencing. Mentoring by senior students will be done in a group format using Zoom video-conferencing. Peer group meetings, offered in-person or by Zoom, will provide an opportunity for participants to share and provide mutual support to each other; for this Intensive, peer groups will be on an optional, drop-in basis. Finally, Fred will offer a Forum in Tampa to answer questions and interact with participants. The Forum will be live-streamed so that those in other locations can participate.

The commitments for this Intensive are listed below. Before registering for the Intensive please read the commitments and reflect carefully on whether you will be able to keep them

    Commitments for each Intensive participant:

    1. The commitment to a minimum of one hour of daily formal meditative practice, study, and/or other practices related to this Intensive, e.g. maintaining a daily log/journal.
    2. The commitment to participate in your assigned bi-weekly video-conference mentoring group.
    3. The commitment to be present for the Zoom Dharma Talks.
    4. The commitment to be present for the Forum with Fred, in person or by livestream.
    5. The commitment to read Dharma texts assigned for the Intensive.
    6. The commitment to attend all the practice periods of your Sangha during the Intensive, as possible

There is a suggested donation of $100 associated with this Intensive. Please note that participation in this Intensive is only open to members of FCM. For information about membership, please access our website at www.floridamindulness.org.

While this is a two-part intensive, we are only asking that people sign-up for Part 1 at this time.  Part 1 will begin October 2 and continue through December 18. Dharma texts to be read will be announced once registration has been completed. You may pay on-line or send your check made out to the Florida Community of Mindfulness (FCM) to Florida Community of Mindfulness, 6501 N. Nebraska Ave., Tampa, FL 33604.

Fall 2017 Mindful Living Path Intensive
    Mindfulness and Meditation:
    Deepening the Foundations of Practice

In this mindful living path intensive, we will embark on a journey of healing, transformation and awakening through the foundational practices of our community. There are two stages to this path of practice.  First we focus on establishing and deepening our practice of mindfulness and meditation. We learn to stabilize our minds through consistent, daily meditation practice.  We learn to bring mindfulness practices into our daily life so that we can lead a mindful life of presence, grounded in day-to-day reality.  And we also learn how to open our hearts and establish relationships with others that are grounded in goodness and honesty.

Once we have developed the foundational practices we are ready for the second stage of the Mindful Living Path. Here we begin the process of psycho-emotional healing to gain a sense of psychological wholeness and well-being, and to bring greater presence, stability, clarity and ease into our daily life and our relationships with others. We will be much more successful in this second stage of emotional healing and maturity if we have successfully established and deepened the foundational practices of mindfulness and meditation.

In the coming months, we will practice as a community through both of these stages of the Mindful Living Path. The Fall 2017 Intensive Mindfulness and Meditation:  Deepening the Foundations of Practice will be followed by a Spring 2018 Intensive on Emotional Healing. The Fall Intensive is appropriate for those new to mindfulness and meditation and for those continuing from the Summer Intensive, Happiness and Stability. For longer-term practitioners, this is an opportunity to experientially review these core foundation practices to solidify and strengthen your base. The goal for all is to develop a life grounded in clarity, happiness and meaning.

The eleven-week Fall Mindful Living Intensive begins on October 2nd and end on December 18th.  We will start by developing a consistent daily sitting and walking meditation practice; cultivating the ability to be present to our current experience through daily experiments in mindfulness, and by focusing on mindfulness of the breath, the body and senses.  Next we will develop mindfulness of our mind and its mental events (thoughts, feeling states, and emotions), including how to be an impartial observer of our mind’s activities and how to deal with afflictive emotions. Finally, we will practice bringing mindfulness into personal, family and work relationships and developing a mindful relationship with the larger society and its social, economic and political issues.

Participants in this Intensive will be provided with a path of practice that will include specific readings, meditation practices, and daily life assignments. There will be four Dharma Talks, bi-weekly mentor group calls for individual guidance and support, and in-person or phone peer group meetings that will provide community support. Fred will offer two Forums in Tampa to answer questions and interact with participants. The Forums will be live-streamed so that those in other locations can participate. Dharma texts to be read will be announced once registration has been completed. For more specific information about the path of Mindful Living, please access the Teachings section of our website, and also the Mindful Living Path page that is linked to the Teachings page.

The commitments for this Intensive are listed below. Before registering for the Intensive please read the commitments and reflect carefully on whether you will be able to keep them.

    Commitments for each Intensive participant:

    1. The commitment to a minimum of 30 minutes of daily formal meditation and/or other practices related to this Intensive.
