Look at what your body is – it is not you
But an image in the mirror of awareness,
Just like the reflection of the moon on the water.

Look at what your mind is – it is not
The thoughts and feelings that appear within it
But the bright knowing space that holds them.

                   -Chan master Han-shan Te-ching (1546–1623)

Since the time of the Buddha, countless teachers have pointed out the innate simplicity and spontaneous wisdom of our true mind. Unfettered by conditioning and emotional reactivity, this mind has the capacity to guide and support us spontaneously in living an awakened life. Chan (Zen) master Han-shan was a great meditation master and reformer who lit the light of direct awakening in 17th century China. Utilizing the teachings and poetry of Han-shan, this retreat will focus on facilitating participants meditative experience of their original and natural mind and show how to integrate this understanding into all circumstances of daily life. Directly experiencing the mind and all the things that appear in it (especially the self!) as empty of any substance or solidity allows one to break through into the totally open and spacious mind nature. This is the basis of true transformation.

The retreat will include 3-4 Practice Sessions for meditation daily, Dharma talks and instruction, meetings with Fred, and group sharing, along with "off line" time for meals & rest, outdoor walking, personal practice, and time to take care of essential household tasks and responsibilities. If you cannot be fully present for retreat's full schedule, please do not register.

This retreat is a Wisdom Path Retreat and is appropriate for those FCM members who have previously participated in a Wisdom Path Intensive or retreat, or for those who are walking the Dharma Path and feel ready for a deeper exploration of the nature of mind through meditation.

The retreat begins on Wednesday, September 1 at 7:00 pm, and ends on Monday, September 6 at noon. We ask that participants plan to participate in the entire retreat with the same energy of commitment and dedication as one would bring to an in-person residential retreat. We will be sending you a retreat schedule to follow and practice guidelines to help you create conditions in your home to support your retreat.

The retreat registration fee is $150. The fee covers administrative, facility and incidental expenses connected to the retreat, but does not include any offerings to the teacher. Participants will have an opportunity to make an offering for the teachings at the conclusion of the retreat. A limited number of Retreat Scholarships are available. Please click here to see FCM’s Retreat Scholarship Policy and for an Application, which needs to be submitted prior to the registration deadline of August 29.

The last day to register for the retreat is August 29.

Please note that participation in this retreat is open to only members of the Florida Community of Mindfulness. While participation in many of our online  programs are open to everyone, membership in FCM is for persons wanting to deepen their practice of living an awakened life by being part of a dedicated practice community, having a direct relationship with a Dharma teacher, and participating in practice opportunities such as Intensives and longer retreats.
