Verses on Trust in Mind

A Non-residential Retreat at the Tampa Center With Roshi Hogen Bays

February 19 - 23, 2020

The Great Way is not difficult

for those who have no preferences

When love and hate are both absent

everything becomes clear and undisguised.

So begins the Third Chan (Zen) Patriarch’s deeply respected and much recited poem, "Verses on Trust in Mind.” This teaching from the Third Patriarch presents the timeless Dharma truths of non-duality in language of simple clarity that shows us how the practice the Way in our daily life.

FCM welcomes Roshi Hogen Bays of Portland, Oregon back to the Tampa Practice Center for a four-day retreat February 19-23 based on understanding and practicing this profoundly beautiful text. Relying on traditional Buddhist teachings and practices, Roshi Bays will be presenting these teachings and practices with insight and concreteness so that they can easily become daily practices each participant can embrace. As usual, this will be a silent retreat. The silence affords participants the opportunity to deepen their meditative experience while absorbing the experiential meaning of the teachings and practices presented during the retreat.

Hogen is a Zen priest of the White Plum Sangha, a leader of the Zen Community of Oregon, and co-abbot of Great Vow Zen Monastery in Clatskanie, Oregon. A practitioner of Zen Buddhism for 50 years, Hogen began his practice in 1969 under Philip Kapleau at Rochester Zen Center and was a Dharma brother of our teacher Fred. He lived and trained at Zen Center of Los Angeles under the direction of Taizan Maezumi, Roshi from 1980-1984 and took priest’s ordination. After advice and consultation with Harada, Roshi and other Zen teachers, in 2000 he received Dharma Transmission from Chozen Roshi. Hogen holds a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and Master’s Degree (MS) in Psychology. He worked for the Oregon Department of Corrections for 15 years.

Please note that this retreat is NON-RESIDENTIAL, which means that we will be together for most waking hours of the day, but after evening meditation each night everyone will return to their own home (or to the place where you are staying). Out-of-town participants are encouraged to make their own arrangements for accommodations either at the home of sangha friends or hotels. A limited number of accommodations for the retreat may be available at FCM's Lambright House for FCM members; please email info@floridamindfulness.org if you are a member wanting to inquire about the Lambright housing for this retreat.

The retreat registration fee is $200.* The fee covers three vegan meals daily, as well as administrative, facility, and incidental expenses connected to the retreat, but does not include any offerings to the teacher. Participants will have an opportunity to make an offering for the teachings at the conclusion of the retreat. A limited number of Retreat Scholarships may be available. Please click here to see FCMs Retreat Scholarship Policy and for an Application, which must be submitted prior to the registration deadline for this retreat.

The retreat begins with dinner on Wednesday, February 19, and ends after lunch on Sunday, February 23. We ask that all participants attend the entire time of the retreat (6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Wednesday; 7:00 am to 9:00 pm Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; and 7:00 am to 1:00 pm Sunday). If you cannot be fully present for all of these days and times, please do not register. No late arrivals or early departures are permitted, as they significantly interfere with the process of retreat for everyone.

The last day to register for the retreat is January 22.

Please note that your registration does not guarantee acceptance into the retreat. Once registration has closed, all who registered by the posted cut off date will be considered for acceptance into the retreat, with preference given to FCM members if the retreat is oversubscribed. Registrants will receive an email stating either acceptance into the retreat or placement on the waiting list within a few days of the closing of registration.

The retreat registrar will be sending additional information to accepted registrants before the retreat begins.
