Cultivating an Open Heart: The Path of the Four Immeasurables

In the Buddhist teachings, the path of the heart is equal to the path of meditation/wisdom as a basis for happiness and well-being. For these three months we will focus on the cultivation of an open, accepting, kind, and compassionate heart through the study and practice of the Four Immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity.


These four divine abodes show us what the human heart is capable of and by practicing them we can uncover the natural qualities of our own heart. We can learn to live with an openness that feels connection and friendliness towards all beings, rejoices in their happiness, and desires to alleviate their suffering. We will practice meditations to cultivate these qualities in our mind, and through consistent mindfulness we will bring them into our daily life of relationship, work and interaction with others.


Participants in this Intensive will be provided with a path of practice that will include readings and assigned weekly meditation and daily life practices. Bi-weekly group mentoring video-conference calls on Zoom will provide individual guidance and support. Four Dharma talks by senior student, Diane Powell, will be offered to participants by Zoom. Small group meetings occurring bi-weekly, in-person or by Zoom, will provide an opportunity for participants to share deeply and provide mutual support to each other. In addition, Fred will offer both a Daylong Retreat and a Forum in Tampa to answer questions and interact with participants; these will be available via Zoom so that those in other locations can participate.

The commitments for this Intensive are listed below. Before registering for the Intensive please read the commitments and reflect carefully on whether you will be able to keep them.

 

Commitments for each Intensive participant:

  1. The commitment to a minimum of 30 minutes of daily formal meditation and/or other practices related to this Intensive.
  2. The commitment to participate in monthly Dharma talks via phone/video conference call, and a Daylong Retreat and a Forum with Fred, in-person or through Zoom.
  3. The commitment to participate in bi-weekly Mentor Group phone/video conference consultations.
  4. The commitment to participate in bi-weekly Peer Groups for support/discussion in person or via phone group. 
  5. The commitment to attend weekly Sangha and monthly Daylong Retreats, as possible. 
  6. The commitment to read and study recommended books and articles. 
There is a suggested donation of $100 associated with this Intensive. This is a suggested donation, and participants are free to donate more or less, depending on their individual practice of Dana and their financial situation.  You may pay on-line or send your check made out to the Florida Community of Mindfulness (FCM) to Florida Community of Mindfulness, 6501 N. Nebraska Ave., Tampa, FL 33604.

 

Please note that participation in this Intensive is only open to members of FCM. For information about membership, please access our website at www.floridamindfulness.org.

 

This Intensive will begin on February 18 and end on May 13.  Readings and Zoom teleconference/phone call instructions will be announced once registration has been completed.

 

Registration will close on January 21.  To ensure you register on time, please register immediately or mark the registration closing date in your calendar now.


REGISTRATION PROCEDURES: 

Please read the information below before you click to register.

 

Mentoring Groups. When you register, you will also be asked to indicate your preferences for the Mentoring Groups offered through Zoom.  The following 8 mentoring groups will be listed, and you will be required to score each group as one of the following:

  • my first choice
  • my second choice
  • could do but not preferred
  • cannot do. 

If there is more than one group that will work well for you, please mark all these as “my first choice.” This will provide us with added flexibility in making group assignments. Please have your calendar available when you register so that you can complete this part of the registration process accurately. 

 

Group 1: Mondays evenings, 7:00-8:00 pm on 3/4, 3/11, 4/1, 4/8, 4/22 (Please note that these dates are not bi-weekly)

Group 2: Tuesday mornings, 9:00-10:00 am on 2/26, 3/12, 3/26, 4/9, 4/23

Group 3: Tuesday afternoons, 4:00-5:00 pm on 2/26, 3/12, 3/26, 4/9, 4/23

Group 4: Wednesday mornings, 7:30-8:30 am 2/27, 3/13, 3/27, 4/10, 4/24

Group 5: Wednesday evenings, 5:30-6:30 pm on 2/27, 3/13, 3/27, 4/10, 4/24

Group 6: Wednesday evenings, 5:30-6:30 pm on 3/6, 3/20, 4/3, 4/17, 5/1

Group 7: Thursday mornings, 8:30-9:30 am 2/28, 3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 4/25

Group 8: Thursday evenings, 5:30 -6:30 pm on 3/7, 3/21, 4/4, 4/18, 5/2


Choices for Peer Groups:  Fort Myers, Naples, St. Petersburg, Tampa, or by Phone. For Tampa only, please indicate your preferred meeting times (Sundays 8:40-9:40 or Sundays 12:45-1:45). Please indicate all the choices that you would be able to attend.
