The Buddha taught us that death can come at any moment and his teachings urge us to prepare for death every day. In our death-defying culture, it is hard to even imagine that we are actually going to die, let alone know how to get ready for it.

This class will be an opportunity for FCM members to examine death and dying in the context of our Buddhist practice. The first three classes will be taught by Fred and in the fourth class Marilyn Warlick and Alex Lerner will facilitate a panel presentation by FCM members involved in the FCM Death and Dying initiative.

The class is for FCM members and will be held at the Tampa Practice Center and Live Streamed for members out of area. Fred requests that Tampa Bay members attend in person rather than via Live Stream to create the benefit of a live and shared practice experience.   This class will cover some of the same materials from the Facing Death class but will also go into new areas, so it is recommended for all FCM members, so that we all continue to keep this topic alive in our lives and practice.

The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • Deepen our understanding of impermanence,  reflecting on our own death with clarity, understanding, and compassion.
  • Explore Buddhist perspectives on death, what happens when we die, and how we can support that transition process for ourselves and others.
  • Explore what environment, practices and guidance that you might want to utilize at the time of death.
  • Become familiar with some of the post death options (washing the body, green burials, “home funerals”) that are environmentally friendly and in line with Buddhist values
Not included in this class, but in the months following it we are planning another Advanced Directives Presentation by Empath Choices for Care and an opportunity for continued conversation on death and dying in regular FCM Death Cafés lead by Marilyn and Laura Starkey.  More information to follow on our calendar.
