Fall 2016 Mindful Living Path Intensive:  Calming, Unifying and Opening the Mind: Practicing the Full of Awareness of the Breath Sutra

October 3 December 26

Background

During the past twelve months our community has participated in three Intensives based on the Mindful Living Path of FCMs Study and Practice Guide. The first of these, entitled Happiness and Solidity in Daily Life: The Foundation Practices of the Plum Village Tradition focused on cultivating mindfulness in meditation practice and in daily life. The second, entitled Foundational Practices for Healing and Transforming Emotional Afflictions, focused on understanding and transforming deep-seated negative emotional formations and learning to live with greater stability and clarity. The Summer Self-Development Intensive, focused on making changes in specific aspects of our daily life, offering opportunities to apply the foundational practices in ways that broaden and deepen their impact on our lives.

Fall 2016 Mindful Living Path Intensive

The Fall Mindful Living Path Intensive will return us to a foundational teaching and practice of our tradition. Thich Nhat Hanh calls this, Source Buddhism. One of the oldest teachings of the Buddha relates to using the breath to develop mindfulness, concentration and insight in order to calm and stabilize the mind, and to develop equanimity and serenity. These teachings are presented in the Full Awareness of the Breath Sutra (Anapanasati Sutta). This sutra offers sixteen specific meditations to facilitate the practitioners capacity to realize the fruits of these teachings in their consciousness and in daily life. Working sequentially with each of these meditations, this Intensive will be an opportunity to develop both stability and depth of meditative practice.

Participants in this Intensive will be provided with a path of practice that will include a mentor, readings, weekly meditation practices, and mindful living assignments. Bi-weekly talks with a mentor alternating weekly with email updates will provide individual guidance and support. Three Dharma talks by a senior student will be offered to participants by phone conference call. Small group meetings offered bi-weekly, in-person or by phone, will be provide an opportunity for participants to share and provide mutual support to each other. In addition, Fred will offer two Forums in Tampa to answer questions and interact with participants. These Forums will be live-streamed so that those in other locations can participate.

For more specific information about the Path of Mindful Living, please access FCM Study and Practice Guide under the Teachings section of our website.
