    Wednesday Evening
    Meditations for Mindful Living

We aspire to enjoy our life and our relationships with others. To be fully present to ourselves and those around us and to live life with ease and awareness. Yet, we often find that our daily life is just opposite. Lost in our thoughts and our personal dramas, we miss the beauty and simplicity of our life and relationships.  Instead of enjoying the roses in life, we remain lost the endless spinning of our minds.

We need to transform how we relate to life and mindfulness is a powerful tool to accomplish this goal.  It will facilitate a profound shift that will enable us to stabilize our minds, meaningfully ground ourselves in everyday reality and can be used to heal the psycho-emotional wounds that we may carry within us from our past.  The practice of mindfulness, of learning how to be fully present, focused and aware of what’s going on in and around us right now, is the practice that allows this transformation to occur.

Wednesday evening meditations for mindful living, based on the wonderful teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village tradition, are designed to help us build a daily life that is grounded and stable with greater clarity and ease.

    Teachings
Mindfulness: Learning to live in the present moment; cultivating a happy, peaceful mind “here and now”
Emotional healing: the dangers of spiritual by-passing
    Four Foundations of Mindfulness
    Five Mindfulness Trainings

    Practices
    Sitting, body/breath, walking mindfulness meditation
    Deep relaxation
    Mindful communication
Working with stress, afflictive emotions and difficult mind states
Mindfulness practices for daily life, including work and relationships

FCM members and their families/guests are invited to join the Florida Community of Mindfulness for a potluck Thanksgiving dinner at the Tampa Practice Center.  There is so much in life to be grateful for no matter what the outer circumstances of our life, not the least of which is our Dharma community and the supportive and kind friends we have met here. So we will gather together to express our deep appreciation for all that is good in life!

As part of our Buddhist aspiration to do no harm and help support the sustainability of life on our planet, we are planning this year to have a vegan/vegetarian potluck, with the emphasis on the vegan. If possible, try to brings foods which do not contain animal products (eggs, milk or cheese.)  For some of us this will be an opportunity to explore some new recipes! Everyone is being asked to bring either an appetizer, main dish/side dish, salad or dessert to share. Please register on-line to let the planners know how many will be coming with you and what food you will bring to share.

    What should I bring?

If you last name begins with the following letters, we suggest that you bring:

    A-D      Appetizer

E-K      Main Dish or Side Dish

    L-O      Salad

    P-Z      Dessert

We will meet in the Meditation Hall at 2:00 promptly to express our gratitude and then will enjoy our meal together.   If you are interested in helping with set-up, or if you can stay afterwards to help clean-up, please e-mail Katy Shields at katyshieldsartist@gmail.com.

    * Registration closes on Tuesday, November 21st.

    Thursday Evening Extended Meditation

Every Thursday evening from 7:15 to 9:00 pm in the Tampa practice center meditation hall (please try to arrive about 10 minutes early). Enter and remove your shoes in the Meditation Hall foyer. Enter the Meditation Hall quietly and settle in.

Our teacher Fred leads this weekly extended evening meditation, which is open to all. The evening will consist of two 35-minute sitting meditation periods, with formal walking meditation in-between. These extended meditation periods offer students the opportunity to deepen their practices of mindfulness, concentration and insight.

While meditation is occurring Fred offers private interviews in the Center's downstairs Interview Room to FCM members (those who have become Fred’s students) - please visit Membership for more information. Interviews are conducted in the Zen “dokusan" tradition – going alone to visit the teacher. No advance sign-up occurs for interviews; instead, students line up at the back of the meditation hall and the personal interviews unfold, one following the other, as time permits. The length of each interview may range from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the situation. Dokusan pertains to issues that arise in the student's personal meditation practice and their life experiences of integrating the teachings into their daily life, not with intellectual or theoretical matters.

Mindfulness can be understood as a special way of paying attention. We focus our awareness in the present moment, with complete acceptance of our thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations, just as they are. Rather than being lost in regrets about the past or worries about the future, we are completely present in this very moment. Through developing this way of paying attention we become more grounded, peaceful, resilient and loving.

Thich Nhat Hanh said, “You cannot have mindfulness without compassion and the practice of compassion always begins with compassion towards oneself.”

Please join us for a morning of practicing the 4 Foundations of Mindfulness in the Plum Village tradition – Stopping, Calming, Resting, Healing. Join us for a morning of developing the mind of relaxation, nourishment and refreshment, not only for ourselves, but for the benefit of others, as well.

    Who Will Benefit?

    Everyone is welcome, including members & non-members;
    People who have taken “Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation” classes;

It is also for those trying to spend less time on the internet, Facebook, TV, shopping, etc. Please join us to learn more about the 11th Step (Prayer and Meditation) and how to make it part of your daily life. Meditation is easy to learn and will help you cultivate a rich and rewarding spiritual practice, one that will support you in realizing the promises.

People who practice meditation report reduced stress, greater peace, more clarity and happiness in their lives. They sleep better and have an increased ability to concentrate. These are some of the benefits of adding meditation to your recovery program.

Everybody is welcome, whether you are just starting out or have been meditating for a while. The evenings will be led by teachers with a foundation in both meditation and recovery.

Qigong is Chinese yoga and meditation that involves gentle but surprisingly effective ways of moving and caring for the mind and body. It uses low-impact exercises drawn from Daoism, Buddhism, traditional Chinese health practices, and even Asian martial arts traditions. Sessions include 50 minutes of simple warm-up exercises and short movement forms to stretch and condition the body. Appropriate for beginners and people with more experience. This class currently meets on Wednesday evenings 6:00 – 6:50 at the FCM Practice Center.

There is no charge for this class, but donations are gratefully accepted. All are welcome regardless of ability to contribute.

    Sitting, body/breath, walking mindfulness meditation
    Deep relaxation

Beginning Anew: New Year's Ceremony and Celebration

FCM members and their families and friends

In the Buddhist tradition, the passing of an old year and the beginning of a new one is celebrated in a sacred manner.  We take stock of the past year, our life and relationships, our activities and endeavors, and make a sincere inventory of the actions of our body, speech and mind. Then, symbolically freeing ourselves from the baggage of the past year, we start the New Year with renewed focus, motivation and inspiration. Rather than celebrating the New Year by numbing and clouding the mind, we begin anew, renewing our commitment to awaken to the richness and beauty of life’s fullest potential and joining together to celebrate our connection with each other as a community.

We invite you to start the New Year with us on January 1 from 1 to 5 p.m. for ceremony, refreshments and celebration at our Tampa Practice Center. We warmly welcome and encourage those of you outside the Tampa Bay area to join us this year in Tampa. Please contact MT, our Bed & Breakfast coordinator at j.emm.tee@gmail.com for assistance in finding accommodations at a member’s home.

Ceremony: We will begin at 1 pm with sitting and walking meditation. This will be followed by guided meditations and rituals to acknowledge the passing of the year, to facilitate a "letting go" of the past, to renew ourselves in the present, and to focus our intentions for the future.

Refreshments: Following the ceremony we will continue to celebrate our connection with each other with light refreshments and warm friendship. Please bring a vegetarian or vegan "finger food" (sweet or savory) as a light snack or a non-alcoholic beverage to share.   Suggestions by last name: A-I savory; J-R sweet: S-Z drinks.

Celebration: Following our social time and refreshments we will meet again in the Meditation Hall for a Plum Village style Be-In. The Be-In is an opportunity to enjoy musical performance, skits and fun!  Individuals, sangha related groups and selfless service teams are invited to perform short skits (serious or funny), songs, or other theatrics.  No experience necessary, just willingness to join and have fun--either as a performer or audience.   If you’d like to perform in the Be-In please contact MT at j.emm.tee@gmail.com.

Please register online for this event. This year, our ceremony/celebration is open only to FCM members and their families and friends. When you register, please include the names of any family or friends who will be attending with you.
